Sacha Baron Cohen toch Freddie Mercury in biopic?

Er gaan al jaren geruchten over een biopic over Freddie Mercury, de lead-singer van rockband Queen. Sacha Baron Cohen werd steeds in verband gebracht met de hoofdrol. Hij verliet in 2013 echter het project wegens creatieve meningsverschillen.

Jim Beach, de manager van Queen vertelde echter dat Sacha Baron Cohen nu opnieuw zou zijn benaderd om de rol van Freddie Mercury te spelen, alsmede de film te schrijven, produceren en regisseren:

“You have probably followed the saga of the famous Queen-Freddie Mercury biopic which has been developing in Hollywood for the last seven years. An important breakthrough is that we have now managed to persuade Sacha Baron Cohen to write, produce and direct this movie, and he has also agreed to star.”

Bandlid Brian May plaatste hierna een bericht op zijn website waarin hij beweert dat het allemaal een grap was. Tevens liet hij weten dat hij Sasha niet geschikt vindt voor de rol:

“What led us to that conclusion was the last three movies that he’s made – The Dictator, Les Miserables and Hugo – in which he makes outstanding performances, but they’re very much Sacha Baron Cohen performances. And we thought there has to be no distraction in the Freddie movie. You have to really suspend that disbelief – the man who plays Freddie, you have to really believe is Freddie. And we didn’t that could really happen with Sacha. It’s a shame that there were these sensationalist stories about him walking out. None of that was true, because we owe Sacha a lot. He had so much enthusiasm for the project and it really helped us kick it into the start position.”

Cohen is vooral bekend van zijn typetjes Borat en Ali G. De Brit trok zich twee jaar geleden terug uit het project vanwege creatieve onenigheid tussen hem en de bandleden May en Roger Taylor. Baron Cohen speelde afgelopen jaar in The Dictator, Les Misérables en Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted. Dit jaar is hij te zien in Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues.

Freddie Mercury overleed in 1991 op 45-jarige leeftijd aan de gevolgen van aids. De film over het turbulente leven van de frontman is al jaren in de maak.
