Johnny Depp is Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts sequels

Eerder werd bekend dat Johnny Depp te zien zal zijn in de sequels op de Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Vervolgens werd er door fans volop gespeculeerd welke rol hij op zich zou gaan nemen. Vandaag blijkt dat Depp inderdaad het personage van de kwaadaardige tovenaar Gellert Grindelwald voor zijn rekening zal nemen. Producent David Heyman vertelde tegenover The Leaky Cauldron:

 “We filmed early. I was amazed. It was completely bonkers. I was convinced it [would be leaked] you can keep very few secrets nowadays, especially something like that! When he came to Leavesden and we filmed for two days…and it didn’t come out. That’s mad.”

Regisseur David Yates vertelde over Johnny Depp:

“The whole principal of casting the movie was go with the best actor. Go for the most inspired, interesting, right fit for that character. And as we approached Grindelwald we thought, ‘who’s going to take this in an interesting direction?’ In this business, it’s a weird old business. You’re brilliant one week, people are saying odd things the next, you go up and down. But no one takes away your pure talent.

“Johnny Depp is a real artist. He’s created several characters who have really resonated in our popular culture. He’s a really brilliant, brilliant actor. We were excited about seeing what he would do with this guy, the character. He’s fearless; he’s imaginative; he’s ambitious. We thought he would do something fun and special. So we went for him, purely on that selfish basis. We don’t care if he’s famous or not famous. We just know he’s interesting.”

David Heyman voegde toe:

“Grindelwald is an iconic character, so it was important to have someone who had that weight. There’s a reason why he has that weight. It’s because, you know, he’s a fine actor who makes unexpected choices.”

Yates bevestigde tevens het nieuws van eerder deze week dat Dumbledore terug zal keren in de sequels:

“In the second movie Dumbledore comes back… no it’s not going to be Michael Gambon. No, we need a younger Dumbledore.”

De productie van het eerste vervolg moet in juli of augustus 2017 van start gaan.

Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them volgt de avonturen van Newt Scamander, die zeventig jaar voor de gebeurtenissen in de Harry Potter-films op onderzoek uit gaat om een encyclopedie te schrijven over alle magische dieren.

Voordat Harry, Ron, Hermelien en de rest voor het eerst Zweinstein binnenliepen doet Newt Scamander onderzoek naar magische wezens. Hij reist naar New York met zijn vertrouwde koffertje gevuld. Daarin bevinden zich zeldzame en bedreigde magische dieren die Newt in het verleden ontdekt heeft. Maar door een ongeluk ontsnappen enkele van de gevaarlijkste wezens uit het koffertje en moet hij hen terug zien te vinden voordat ze schade aanrichten. Daarin wordt hij gedwarsboomd door een sekte van Amerikaanse tovenaars die bang zijn voor No-Maj (de Amerikaanse naam voor Dreuzels).

De film wordt geregisseerd door Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 & 2-regisseur David Yates en de cast bestaat uit Eddie Redmayne, Colin Farrell, Katherine Waterston, Ezra Miller, Samantha Morton, Dan Fogler, Carmen Ejogo, Ron Perlman en Alison Sudo. De film zal vanaf 17 november 2016 te zien zijn.
